The Backstory of Yellow Runner

Before the miles, before the mountains, Sally McRae was a dreamer and always happy. But her story didn’t begin that way. Beneath that optimism was a childhood shaped by deep adversity, an abusive father and the loss of her mother at just seventeen. The kind of hardship that can stop someone before they ever find their footing.

Instead, Sally kept going.

Today, she’s a professional ultra runner, but Yellow Runner isn’t about titles or finish lines. It’s about pushing through adversity and choosing resilience. Running up a mountain becomes a powerful parallel for life itself. It’s steep. It’s uncomfortable. There are moments when quitting feels easier than continuing. But Sally’s story reminds us that progress doesn’t come from avoiding the hard parts. It comes from moving through them.

When creating Yellow Runner, it was deeply important to tell an honest story—one that Sally would feel proud of and comfortable sharing with the world. Stories like this require trust, care, and a responsibility to represent someone’s lived experience with authenticity and respect. From the beginning, the goal was never to sensationalize hardship, but to honor the strength and humanity behind it.

Athlete stories can be complex and difficult to distill into something short and meaningful. At Story Directive, one of the things that makes us unique is our ability to clearly tell complicated stories in a way that feels both concise and deeply human. We believe authenticity and respect should always exist together, especially when someone is trusting you with their story.

Yellow Runner captures that truth with honesty and grace, showing how resilience is built not in perfect conditions, but through persistence.

Written, directed, and produced by Brandon Flint in 2018, Yellow Runner received an overwhelming response when it was released and became the launchpad for Story Directive as a brand built on meaningful, story-driven work. To this day, it remains a personal favorite and a reminder of why powerful storytelling matters. Watch Yellow Runner here.
