Production Is Like a Concert

On Saturday night, I went to see the band Mumford & Sons live.

It was an amazing show.

When I was in high school, I was in a punk rock band.

Big ambitions to tour and be successful, but it didn't pan out, as do most bands.

As I sat there watching the band play, I thought about what it took for them to get to this point, to be on a global tour with millions of fans.

The odds of becoming that successful are very small, and yet there they were.

Countless hours of writing, practicing, performing, and perfecting.

Being able to perform when it counts.

At many points during the show, the lead singer was singing, playing guitar, and using a bass drum to keep the beat throughout the concert.

All being supported by other amazing musicians on stage.

I found it interesting how it parallels my industry.

On a stills or video set as a director or photographer, you are kind of like the lead singer of a band.

You have to orchestrate the production and perform at your best.

You don't have a crowd, but you have a client who is trusting you to deliver.

You have a team of talented professionals on your side, producers, assistants, PAs, digital tech's etc, to support you.

You can only do that after years and countless hours of experience and practice.

Sometimes I still think it would be so fun to be in a rock band touring the world, but then I'm reminded I get to see amazing places, and work with amazing people, and do what I know best.

It reminded me that's pretty cool too.

Thanks to everyone who has trusted in me and my crew over the years!
